Shrinking's Jason Segel Teases a New Direction for Season 4
The hit Apple TV comedy Shrinking is set to return for a fourth season, and star Jason Segel is already hinting at a fresh direction for the show. With the third season finale wrapping up, the cast and creators gathered at PaleyFest LA to celebrate and offer a glimpse into what's next.
Creator Bill Lawrence confirmed that the first three seasons form a closed arc, and the fourth season will take a different turn with a time jump and a new narrative focus. Segel, who also co-created the show, believes it's time for his character, Jimmy, to let loose and enjoy life after three seasons of emotional struggles.
"Maybe it's time for Jimmy to try to have some fun," Segel said. "We've seen Jimmy going through it, but it's been with an emotional twisted ankle. We need to see him run a little bit and break out."
Segel's emotional connection to the show is evident, especially with his on-screen daughter, played by Lukita Maxwell. "Every time I do a scene with Lukita, I start to tear up," he shared. "I think it's just because I've been tuned to think of her as my daughter, and we've been through a lot together in the show."
The cast's dedication to their characters is remarkable. Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie, Christa Miller, Maxwell, and Ted McGinley all brought their characters' challenges to life, with Miller admitting to feeling overwhelmed during a scene involving her character's husband's heart surgery. The emotional depth of the show is a testament to the actors' commitment.
Lawrence assured fans that the entire ensemble will return for season four, and the PaleyFest panel offered a glimpse into the show's future. Michael J. Fox, who joined the cast in season three, made a surprise appearance to discuss his collaboration with Harrison Ford.
Ford's portrayal of Paul, a Parkinson's patient, was praised by Fox. "What Harrison was so brilliant about is that I didn't have to prove I had Parkinson's," Fox said. "He had to prove to me that he had Parkinson's. It was so great."
Ford, known for his playful demeanor, added a layer of mystery to his character's emotional depth. "I don't know, and besides not knowing, I don't give a shit," he joked. "I have so much fun working for you, Bill, that it feels really irresponsible to let you know that."
As Shrinking prepares for its fourth season, fans can expect a fresh and emotional journey. With a time jump and a new narrative arc, the show will continue to explore the complexities of its characters' lives, leaving audiences eager to see how Jimmy and the rest of the group navigate their personal growth and healing.
